Hello all! My name is Laura Hanby and I am the teen librarian at North Canton Public Library. I am responsible for pretty much everything teen in the library including teen programming (which I do alongside my colleague Edyta Metz), ordering teen materials, doing outreach with the middle school and more! As such, I will probably be the primary contributor to the teen portion of this blog.

Let me tell you a little bit more about myself. I am originally from the Columbus area and am a graduate of The Ohio State University (Go Bucks!) and Kent State University. I moved up here to the North Canton area about a year ago to take on my very first librarian position right here at NCPL. It has been a wonderful experience! The North Canton community has been so warm and welcoming and NCPL has been a great place for me to learn and grow as a librarian.

As for my interests, I love books, movies, and TV shows. I tend to prefer historical fiction, fantasy (Harry Potter is my favorite!), and contemporary realistic fiction when it comes to books, and love just about any genre except for horror when it comes to movies. I love to talk about movies and TV, so if you are ever in the library and are in need of recommendations, please hit me up!

Okay, enough about me, let me tell you about some of the awesome things we have going on teen-wise at NCPL! Coming up this week on Thursday, December 11 we have our monthly teen movie. This month’s selection is The Nightmare Before Christmas (PG). Don’t miss out! We also have a Holiday Gift DIY program on December 18 for all of you still looking for gifts to give your loved ones. And, for those of you looking for community service hours we have just recently started a Teen Community Service Program. Our first two events were in November (making dog beds for a local animal shelter) and the beginning of this month (making holiday cards for a local assisted living facility). Our next Teen Community Service event will be in February, when we will be making soap and collecting toothbrushes and toothpaste for a homeless shelter. For dates, times, and registration for these and our many other programs, see the calendar on our website.

You should also stay tuned to the calendar for information on next year’s teen programs. Some of the things that we have planned include a One Direction party (coming up soon on January 2), an Adventure Time party, a teen gamer club, a teen graphic novel club, a teen writer club and more!

Hope to see you in the library soon!
