Every season is perfect for reading, but summers are the best. Porch swing, beaches, parks and air-conditioned libraries are some of our favorite spots for getting lost in a book during the summer.

For children, not only is reading over the summer fun, but it’s critical to their literacy achievement. Research shows that as much as three months of reading progress that a child gained during the previous school year can be lost over the summer if they do not continue reading. This loss is cumulative year after year. The North Canton Public Library offers fantastic resources and our popular summer reading programs to help encourage children to remain engaged in reading throughout the summer months.

Registration for the reading record begins May 30.  Receive a Fizz Boom READ themed bag, bookmark and reading record to begin your summer reading.  After each row is completed, totaling one hour of reading, children can choose a prize from the treasure chest.  A final prize is earned if the whole reading record is completed.  Enter for a chance to win a grand prize by completing the entire reading record by July 19.  All other prizes are available while supplies last.

The children’s department also offers fantastic programming all summer long!

June 9 – July 31 – Read, and “spark” an interest in others to read, this summer by taking part in our Teen Summer Reading Program. Participation is easy. Simply read books, attend library programs, and/or complete our biweekly Spark Challenges (found in the teen room) and get your name submitted for our biweekly drawings for gift card prizes! For each activity you complete pick up an entry form in the Teen Room, fill it out, and drop it in the submission bucket. On each entry form, you will be asked to describe the book you read, the program you attended, or Spark Challenge you completed in three words. Your three word reviews will be posted to the Reaction Board in the Teen Room so that others can be inspired by your awesomeness! At the end of the program, all the entries received throughout the program will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize.
