Every season is perfect for reading, but summers are the best. Porch swing, beaches, parks and air-conditioned libraries are some of our favorite spots for getting lost in a book during the summer.

For children, not only is reading over the summer fun, but it’s critical to their literacy achievement. Research shows that as much as three months of reading progress that a child gained during the previous school year can be lost over the summer if they do not continue reading. This loss is cumulative year after year. The North Canton Public Library offers fantastic resources and our popular summer reading programs to help encourage children to remain engaged in reading throughout the summer months.

Registration for the reading record begins May 30.  Receive a summer reading themed bag and reading record to begin your summer reading.  After each row in the reading record is completed, totaling one hour of reading, children can choose a prize from the treasure chest.  A final prize is earned if the whole reading record is completed.  Enter for a chance to win a grand prize by completing the entire reading record by July 18.  All other prizes are available while supplies last. The first 300 children to register for the program will receive a FREE ticket to the Akron Zoo!

The children’s department also offers fantastic programming all summer long!

Readers ASSEMBLE! Join our hero themed Teen Summer Reading Program. Pick up a sheet of entry forms from the teen room or reference desk, and complete an entry form for every three hours that you read or every library program you attend. It doesn’t matter what you are reading, as long as you are reading. Maybe try a graphic novel featuring your favorite superhero! Place entries in the submission bucket in the teen room. We draw a gift card winner every two weeks, with a grand prize drawing at the end of the program. All entries submitted throughout the summer will be eligible in the grand prize drawing. Victory awaits you!

Escape the Ordinary this summer by participating in our Summer Reading Program. Every time you read a book or attend a program, fill out one of the slips at the Adult/Teen Services desk to be entered to win a prize. Drawings will be held bi-weekly.
