Much like winter, LibCon is coming.

Inspired by the excitement of LibCon coming this Saturday, I wandered around the Library talking with some of my coworkers about their favorite fandoms. “What is a fandom?” you may be asking, as several of my coworkers did. At its most basic, a fandom is a collection of people, in person or online, who really love the same books, movies, TV shows, or comics. Often fandoms will be known by a special name like Potterheads (Harry Potter), Trekkies (Star Trek), or Whovians (Doctor Who). Generally, fandoms center around sci fi and fantasy stories, but we had quite the debate about whether or not Jane Austen counts as a fandom. (I’ve seen people at conventions in Regency dress, you can find passionate fans discussing Austen’s works all over the internet, and fans of the author are refer to as Janeites, so honestly, I’m inclined to say yes, Austen has her own fandom the same as Star Wars.)

While I don’t know that we’ll have any active Janeites dressed as Elizabeth Bennet at LibCon Saturday, I wouldn’t be surprised if we ran into characters from some of these staff favorite fandoms. (Aside, if someone does cosplay as Elizabeth Bennet Saturday, please make sure I see you!) Oh, also, I never would have made a good reporter. I’m writing everyone’s response in the first person, but I’m paraphrasing from my sloppy notes. I’m never allowed to cosplay Lois Lane.
