Hi all! As the weather starts to change and fall continues to creep up on us, I wanted to give you a quick taste of a few adult programs that I’m particularly excited to offer. The first program on my list is a coloring book hour. Although it sounds silly, research has shown that adults who engage in repetitive activities (like coloring) are able to relax and just concentrate on being “in the moment.” The program itself will take place on Tuesday, October 6 at 6 p.m. Coloring pages, markers, and crayons will all be provided. I’m hoping the program will be a fun way to de-stress and just spend some time with friends.

The second program I’m super excited to offer is called The Amish: Inside and Out featuring the speaker Brenda Nixon. Brenda will be offering a first-hand account of what it’s like to be raised and subsequently excommunicated from the Swartenrumber Amish order. She’s presented at a number of local libraries and always seems to attract quite a crowd. Brenda is also a published author and copies of her book will be available at the the conclusion of the program. If you’d like to attend, the program will be on Saturday, October 17 at 2 p.m. Registration is requested, however. Please contact Adult/Teen Services for more information.

Lastly, throughout the month of September we are collecting new and gently used pillowcases that we will be using in October to create simple dresses to benefit needy children in Africa. The name of the organization we are working with is based out of Michigan and called Little Dresses for Africa. If you are interested in participating, there are a number of ways you can get involved. First, you can simply donate pillowcases to the library. If you’d like to help us make as many of the pillowcases into dresses as possible, we will be holding a sewing party on Wednesday, October 28 from 3:30 to 7:00. Finally, if you are unable to attend the sewing party, but would still really like to make a dress, free patterns will be available at the Adult/Teen Services desk. We will accept completed dresses until the end of the day on October 31. On November 1, we will be mailing all completed dresses, as well as any pillowcases left over, to Michigan where they will be distributed to various missionaries.

Of course, there are so many other wonderful programs going on in Adult Services that I simply can’t type them all! For a complete listing, make sure to visit our events calendar or sign up for our newsletter. Until next time~
