It’s old news at this point that the Library has had to make quite a few changes because of COVID. One of the most frustrating changes for us and a lot of you has been our lack of newspapers. For so many people, coming to the library and flipping through The Repository was a big part of their day, but we just haven’t been able to offer that since this all began last March. In between each patron we clean the computers and we put materials in quarantine after they’ve been used, but you can’t really do either with a newspaper. Well, we could quarantine it, but a daily paper isn’t quite as interesting after 7 days, and only one person would ever be able to look at it in a given week.

Now, I know a lot of folks like the feel of the newspaper, and we can’t duplicate that, but we can at least offer access to many of the newspapers we used to have, plus so very many more. It’s all available through NewsBank, and you can even use it from home with your library card.

If you hop on our Databases page, you can select NewsBank from the alphabetical list. Also from that page, you can directly go to a list of all Ohio papers offered by the database. Once on NewsBank, you can search for news by subject, or if you have a particular paper you’re looking for, you can scroll through the A-Z Source List at the top of the NewsBank home page. Each of the publications have varying coverage, but NewsBank makes it easy on the Source List to see what years are covered in what fashion. For instance, here’s a look at what’s available from the Rep:

So if you would like to see today’s newspaper, laid out just as if you were looking at the real thing, select the option with Image.

You can read the Rep and over 3,500 other newspapers now using NewsBank, so while it might not be the same as holding it in your hand, it is a lot cleaner. 😉
